1858 – The first newspaper in what’s now South Dakota was published. It was called the “Dakota Democrat.”

1861 – The second newspaper called the “Weekly Dakotan” was published in Yankton. It is still published today as the ‘Press and Dakotan.”

1874 – Scientist exploring with George Custer found gold in the Black Hills.

1878 – South Dakota’s second largest paper the “Rapid City Journal” was first published. Originally it was called the “Black Hills Journal.”

1887 – The “Argus” and the “Leader” combined forming the “Sioux Falls Argus Leader.” It is the largest South Dakota newspaper.

1889 – South Dakota became a state.

1890 – Pierre became the state capital winning the election over Huron.

1927 – WNAX, a Yankton Radio Station, got its start.

1938 – Gladys Pyle of Huron elected as the first woman United States Senator of South Dakota.

1953 – KELO of Sioux Falls was the first TV station in South Dakota.

1955 – KOTA of Rapid City became the first TV station of western South Dakota.

1972 – Terrible June 9th flood in Rapid City caused 238 deaths.

1972 – George McGovern of the Mitchell area won the Democratic Party’s nomination for President.

1973 – About 150 members of a group called American Indian Movement took over
Wounded Knee to protest conditions on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

1993 – Governor George Mickelson died in the crash of a state-owned airplane.
